EU High Representative Catherine Ashton has condemned Syria for shelling that killed five civilians in Turkey, calling on both countries to refrain from violence.

"Yesterday's incident illustrates clearly the tragic spill-over effects of the Syrian crisis in neighbouring countries," Ashton said in a statement.

"I once again urge the Syrian authorities to put an immediate end to the violence and fully respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all neighbouring countries."

On Wednesday, a mortar fire from Syria on the Turkish town of Akcakale, near the Syrian border, killed several civilians including a woman and three children.

Ankara responded by firing artillery at targets inside Syria. The Turkish government then sought authorization from parliament to conduct, if necessary, more cross-border operations against Syria.

NATO has already condemned Wednesday, Syrian attack on Turkish territory.
