EU's N-Plants Need Upgrade - Draft Report

World | October 4, 2012, Thursday // 08:42

Nuclear stress tests carried out at the European Union's 143 atomic reactors have exposed "hundreds" of problems which could need between EUR 10 B and EUR 25 B of investment in order to restore proper plant safety levels.

A draft copy of a European Commission report that is scheduled to be released Thursday has already leaked.

According to the leaked draft European Commission report, two nuclear power plants are particularly vulnerable, namely Olkiluoto in Finland and Forsmark in Sweden, Der Spiegel reports.

The leaked report allegedly says that none of the 58 nuclear power plants in France meets the safety standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The draft of the report does not say that any nuclear reactor in Europe is too unsafe to operate.

In the aftermath of last year's Fukushima disaster, a decision was made to re-assess the safety of European nuclear power plants. National authorities and experts from EU member-states examined a total of 143 nuclear reactors in order to establish whether they can withstand for example earthquakes and terrorist attacks.
