Elevated levels of ammonia in the air, exceeding the norm, have been recorded Monday in Bulgaria's Danube town of Nikopol, according to the Executive Environment Agency.

The average hourly and average rate for ammonia exceeded the norm 3.63 times and 2.41 times respectively. The pollution is caused by air masses traveling to Bulgaria from the north, with the most likely source being the chemical plant in Turnu Magurele, Romania, specialists note.

Elevated ammonia levels were measured in the air in Nikopol last week as well – September 28 and 29.
