Bulgaria is gravely concerned over the ongoing violence in Syria, where the regime of Bashar al-Assad is tangled in a civil war, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has told the UN General Assembly.
In his first appearance at the UN, Plevneliev became Tuesday one of the first eight state leaders to address their counterparts at the September session of the UN General Assembly.
He was positive that the massive violence in Syria has not only caused major worries internationally but has also led to a total loss of legitimacy of the Syrian regime.
"The increase of the number of refugees and the exacerbation of the humanitarian situation in Syria are posing serious risks for the neighboring states," Plevneliev stated in New York.
He expressed Bulgaria's solidarity with the humanitarian efforts of the European Union, and stated that those responsible for the violence in Syria must be tried by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
On behalf of Bulgaria, Plevneliev has expressed all-out support for the peaceful initiatives of UN envoys – first Kofi Annan, and now Lakhdar Brahimi – to end the violence in Syria, which has been dragging on since the start of an "Arab Spring-type revolution in the country.
In his speech to the UN, the Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev also touched upon other international issues in the Middle East such as the necessity to continue the Middle East Peace Process.
"Bulgaria hopes that the direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestine Authority will be renewed shortly in order to meet the legitimate interests of both sides, and to reach a common agreement," he stated.
