PES Leader: Bulgaria Won't Join Schengen Soon
Bulgaria does not stand any chance to enter the Schengen Agreement during ruling centrist-right GERB's term in power, according to Sergey Stanishev, leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party and the Party of European Socialists.
Even though negative signals arrived from France as early as 2010, the Bulgarian government was adamant that the country would enter Schengen in March 2011, Stanishev reminded in Parliament on Friday.
"Europe no longer trusts GERB," Stanishev declared. The fact that the country's potential Schengen accession is tied with its progress in fighting corruption and organized crime is no coincidence, according to Stanishev, since it is clear that no results have been achieved.
The Dutch government believes that the conditions for the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen have not yet been fulfilled, it was reported on Monday.
The Netherlands argues that the two countries have achieved substantial progress in a number of spheres under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) but have not yet satisfied all criteria.
