Bulgarians need to deliberate more about their present and future, stated Bulgarian European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva.

Thursday the EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner is on a visit to Varna, where she gave a public lecture.

"Each country foreges its own future, but global developments are of the utmost importance for smaller countries," stated Georgieva.

"The future evolution of the EU is pivotal for Bulgaria. I am a great optimist in that respect," added she.

According to the commissioner, Bulgarian citizens need to come out for a more intensive debate regarding the country's strategic course.

The European Commissioner stated that Bulgaria's accession is the most important event in the country's last 20 years, and that the formation of the EU is in turn the biggest event in the history of Europe.

"The course of the financial crisis in Europe very much depends on the success of the European Central Bank in dealing with it," said Georgieva.

"The end of the crisis is not imminent yet, but I am an optimist here to," added she.

According to Georgieva, the results of recent general elections in the Netherlands show that European citizens have retained their faith in the European project.
