Bulgaria's Customs Agency headquarters will not be relocated to the Danube city of Ruse for now, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov surprisingly announced on Tuesday.
On Monday, Borisov's deputy, Finance Minister Simeon Djankov, said that the Customs will be in Ruse by the end of October.
However, Borisov has now revealed that he is postponing the move, since the government needs money to increase retirement pensions and salaries in 2013.
He said the government needed to find at least BGN 800 M in order to go ahead with the planned increase of minimum wages and retirement pensions next year, pointing out that the relocation of the Customs Agency would be an expensive move.
The Prime Minister added that several state agencies will be moved from the capital Sofia to the cities of Burgas, Plovdiv and Varna soon.
The idea to relocate several state institutions is a top priority brainchild of Djankov. The Customs were scheduled to be first to be relocated.
In May, however, over 80% of the Customs employees and those from National Revenue Agency signed a petition against the plan to be relocated from Sofia and submitted it with the Council of Ministers.
At the beginning of September, the Tourism Directorate of the Ministry of Economy and Energy became the first State institution to move from the capital Sofia to the second largest city of Plovdiv under the relocation plan.
