Huge traffic jams have been reported Monday morning in the Bulgarian capital Sofia with the opening of the 2012 – 2013 school year.

The Sofia traffic police informed on the first workday of the week and the first day of school about impeded and heavy traffic near the National Vasil Levski Stadium, on Vasil Levski Boulevard, and the Sofia University in downtown Sofia.

There is also a kilometers-long line on the central Evlogi and Hristo Georgievi Boulevard from the key junction of Orlov Most (Eagles' Bridge) to the National Palace of Culture, NDK.

Such line was further reported on the main thoroughfare of Tsarigradsko Shosse from the Mladost I district to the building of the Parliament in the heart of the city with divers needing 40 minutes to travel the said distance.

Traffic jams are also reported at the intersection of Tsarigradsko Shosse with Sitnyakovo Boulevard and the circle known as 4-th Kilometer.

On this backdrop, further worsened by inclement weather and wet pavement, the Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, stressed residents and visitors are greeting the first day of school and the Day of Sofia with a huge acquisition – the second metro diameter.
