The New York City Health Board has imposed a partial ban on the sale of soft drinks over 473ml in restaurants, stadiums and cinemas.
The measure was proposed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg as part of a campaign to fight obesity, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Television (BNT).
Under the new regulations, fast-food restaurants, cinemas and sports arenas will be barred from selling sugar-sweetened drinks in cups larger than 473ml.
The restriction will not apply in supermarkets and convenience stores, where New Yorkers will be free to buy large bottles of soft drinks.
The ban, which may be challenged by major soft drink manufacturers, is to enter into force in six months, on March 12.
The restriction does not affect diet sodas, drinks that are more than 70-percent fruit juice, or drinks that contain alcohol.
In end-2011, the The New York City Mayor's Office published a survey showing that consuming 600ml of soft drinks a day was equal to consuming 22 kg of sugar per year.
