Cocaine trafficking to Europe has been on the rise, according to an expert of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
DEA Regional Director DEA Mark Dessito heads a 4-day meeting in the western Bulgarian town of Pravets which brings together experts from 26 countries in the Middle East, Central Asia, the Balkans, the US, and Russia.
"The price of cocaine is higher in Europe, which makes it more profitable for criminals from South America. They ship cocaine to Europe because it brings better profits and they earn more money for less, even in comparison to the US," Mark Desito said, as quoted by BGNES.
He emphasized that the trend did not apply for cocaine trafficking from Asia to Europe.
"Technically speaking, things have not changed there and the profit remains as it was years ago," he added.
According to Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who hosts the event, the conference provided an opportunity for exchange of experience and best practices, planning of joint operations and optimizing the fight against organized crime.
