Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev, PM Boyko Borisov and Foreign Affairs Minister Nikolay Mladenov have issued statements of condemnation of the attack against the US consulate in Benghazi which has resulted in 4 deaths, including of US ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens.

"I am deeply shaken by what happened and resolutely denounce this terrorist act," stated President Plevneliev in a letter to US counterpart Barack Obama.

"Allow me on behalf of the Bulgarian people and on my behalf to express my sincere condolences to the families of the killed US diplomats," said PM Borisov in a separate letter to the US President.

"I present my sincere condolences and I share the pain of the families of the four perished American diplomats, their relatives and the American people," added Minister Mladenov in a statement.

The Bulgarian PM further stated that there is no excuse for the attack, and deplored any attempts to excuse it with hurt religious feelings, saying such attempts provoke "anger and repulsion."

"I cannot accept that in the 21st century people can be killed in the name of a religion. At the same time, no one ought to brand whole societies just because they have a different religion," stated Minister Mladenov.

The Bulgarian Foreign Affairs Minister further added that the attack should serve as a reminder that intolerance should be banished from the world.

He expressed his hopes that the Libyan authorities will do everything to ensure the safety of foreign nationals present on their territory.
