Will Bulgaria's New Political Season Be the Epitome of Nonsense?

The relaunch of Parliament singalling Bulgaria's new political season, analysts are speculating about the future key topics of contention.

The issue is even more interesting with less than one year remaining until general elections in the summer of 2013.

As things stand now, there seems to be little to analyse and much to worry about.

The two domestic stories that made headlines lately are nonsensical beyond belief and bode little good for the new season.

The so-called 'AIDS scandal' in the Bulgarian Socialist Party was ignited by a mindless metaphor on the part of socialist MP Anton Kutev, who said that socialist beliefs are infectious and incurable like AIDS.

This affront to both socialists and AIDS-suffering people was ruthlessly fanned by Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov to the Socialist Party's disadvantage, and as a fresh memento of the PM's exceedlingly poor taste.

Then, the populist promise by the government to raise budget salaries and pensions ahead of elections, apathetically criticized by an anemic opposition that seems to just hang out there.

No-one seems ready to discuss entrenched problems with the economy, as well as the education and health systems - problems that are set to haunt Bulgaria during the term of the following cabinet.
