Bulgarian President, Rosen Plevneliev, has firmly told his Macedonian counterpart that Bulgaria will never make compromises with its history.

In the aftermath of recent and renwed attempts of Macedonia to twist historical facts and take over part of Bulgarian history, Plevneliev announces that he has spoken two days ago with Macedonian President, George Ivanov, whom he met in Brussels.

"I told him that historical facts in the region will remain the same as they have been since antiquity. I also stressed that manipulating history and replacing historical facts had never helped anyone on the Balkans. I voiced my opinion that these facts must be left to historians while politicians on both sides of the border must work for maintaining good neighborly relations in a European way; build together infrastructure and organize joint happenings. Bulgaria is extending a hand to Macedonia and we expect concrete proof that we are entering a new stage of our relations. We are judged as Europeans not by what we say, but by what we do at home," Plevneliev says regarding the talks.

The President notes that Ivanov had agreed in full with this opinion, giving him a reason to be optimistic that long-running attempts of Macedonia to divide the two countries and twist history will become a thing of the past.

Plevneliev stressed that the future of the project to build a monument of Bulgarian writer, Dimitar Talev, in the Macedonian town of Prilep will become a test for Ivanov's sincerity.
