Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and President Rosen Plevneliev are extremely excited over the opening of the capital Sofia's second metro line.

The second line will have 11 stations and will connect the districts of Obelya and Lozenets. The line has a capacity of 130 000 passengers a day. It will be served by 18 new energy saving metro trains.

"This is democracy," Borisov said in his speech during Friday's glamorous opening ceremony that was attended by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, among others.

The Bulgarian PM expressed his hope that Barroso would continue sending him messages saying "I love Bulgaria."

Borisov stated that projects like this are improving the nation's self-confidence.

"Sofia is jubilant today, Bulgaria is proud," Plevneliev stated, describing the construction of the second metro line as a "grandiose success."

He reminded that the construction of Sofia's metro was launched 45 years ago, while the almost ready Trakiya highway was started 48 years ago, saying that the projects "several generations of Bulgarians dreamed of" have been developed faster and more successfully by the ruling centrist-right GERB party.

Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova proposed that Stoyan Bratoev, head of the Sofia Metropolitan company, be named honorary citizen of the capital.
