Bulgaria: Bulgaria's Balchik Palace Features Young Artist's Exhibit A painting from Velislava Smilyanova's exhibit in the Quiet Nest gallery in the Balchik Palace.

The "Silent Nest" gallery in the architectural complex "The Palace" ("Dvoretsa") in the Bulgarian Black Sea resort of Balchik has hosted an exhibit by young artist Velislava Smilyanova.

"Velislasva Smilyanova's exhibit in the Balchik Palace is an expression of something personal, a unique reading of what the eyes can see, which has been transformed to the extent of acquiring an expressive touch through colors and lines," commented art critic Hristina Panayotova at the exhibit's opening.

Smilyanova was born in Sofia in 1976; she graduated from Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" with an art degree.

Since 1999, the young artist has taught arts in high schools in Sofia as well as the Sofia Technical University; in 2011, she took a job as an artist for a Sofia event planner.

Smilyanova has had individual exhibits in the Slavyanska Beseda hall and the Rid gallery-club in Sofia, and has also participated in collective exhibits at the Union of Bulgarian Artists and Sofia University "St. Kliment Orhidski". She has also worked on book illustrations.

The Quiet Nest gallery is named after the official original name of the Balchik Palace, "The Quiet Nest Palace".

The Balchik Palace was constructed between 1926 and 1937, when today's Northeastern Bulgaria was under Romanian control in the interwar period, for the needs of Queen Marie of Romania.
