A large-scale wildfire in Southwestern Bulgaria has all but reached a former chemical depot of the Bulgarian military.
The wildfire near the southwestern town of Dupnitsa has engulfed large swathes of pine and beech forest, along the E-79 road leading from Sofia southward into Greece.
The fires have reached the village of Topolnitsa, and are just meters away from the former chemical military base of the Second Bulgarian Army, the BGNES agency reported.
The chemical military depot near Dupnitsa contains large amounts of Cold War-era toxic substances left from the former Bulgarian People's Army, as well as tanks, armored vehicles, military truck, and other pieces of military equipment.
The wildfire near Dupnitsa first erupted at 1:15 pm on Thursday, and has been tackled by fire- fighters from Dupnitsa, Kyustendil, and Bobov Dol, on a 3-km wide front.
The Bulgarian State Railways BDZ have terminated the railway traffic in the region because of the fire.
