The wildfire in southern Bulgaria which engulfed and burned down two houses in southern Bulgaria has been tamed at 1 am Sunday.

The news was reported Sunday morning by the Regional Governor of Sliven, Marin Kavrakov.

Kavrakov says the blaze destroyed anywhere between 8 000 and 10 000 decares of vegetation in the vicinity of the town of Nova Zagora and could turn out to be the largest one in the country.

The effort was focused on limiting the spread of the flames rather than extinguishing them. The fire traveled very quickly because of the type of the vegetation consisting of dry bushes, grass, leaves, and meadows, scorched by the lasting heat.

The road between Nova Zagora and the town of Radnevo was closed due to dense smoke but has reopened for traffic Sunday morning.

The blaze entered the village of Sokol and burned down two houses. The fire there has been tamed. The village of Radevo was threatened as well. It is believed that the fire started at the cemetery of the village of Polsko Padarevo from a burning candle.

Over 160 firemen, forest rangers, Civil Defense teams, and volunteers, from all over southern Bulgaria, with 10 fire trucks and 6 water tanks, took part in the extinguishing effort.
