Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry has assessed the appointment of a new government in Serbia – headed by the new Prime Minister Ivica Dacic, a former aide of dictator Slobodan Milosevic – as a "good step".

Dacic was confirmed as Serbia's new PM on Friday by the Serbian Parliament to head a coalition government of his Serbian Socialist Party (SSP) and newly-elected President Tomislav Nikolic's Serbian Progressive Party (SPP).

"Bulgaria assesses as a good step the formation and election of the new government of the Republic of Serbia. The country has coped with the transition between two different cabinets in an extremely democratic way, and the political class did not allow instability," the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said in a special statement of its spokesperson Vesela Cherneva on Saturday.

"We hope that the new government will undertake the necessary economic and political reforms. We also expect that it will deepen the process of EU integration of Serbia, and of openness in applying what has been agreed upon in the dialogue with Kosovo and a process of normalization and regional cooperation," the Bulgarian government said further.

"For Bulgaria, Serbia is an important neighbor and regional partner, and the European perspective, through reconciliation and prosperity of the Western Balkans, lies in the foundation of our vision and common interest," Sofia concluded.
