Bulgarian Customs officers at Sofia International Airport have found a large number of precious antique coins in a package shipped to Spain.

The Customs employees discovered 144 silver, bronze and copper coins during a routine check. They were hidden in a car tape recorder that was destined to Spain and shipped by a courier company.

Experts have examined the coins and established that they all are cultural treasures under the Cultural Heritage Act.

The earliest coins date from the 5th century B.C. and the latest – from the 16th century A.C. Coins from the Roman Empire are in the largest numbers, followed by Byzantine coins, while those from the 16th century are a pile of Ottoman silver coins, most likely, found together at one location.
