The European Commission has approved funding for 202 new projects under the LIFE+ program, the EU's environment fund, according to a statement of the EC pres office.
The EC received 1 078 applications from the 27 EU Member States in response to its latest call for proposals, which closed in July 2011.
Of these, 202 were selected for co-funding through the programme's three components: LIFE+ Nature and Biodiversity, LIFE+ Environment Policy and Governance and LIFE+ Information and Communication.
The total of 202 projects includes 3 Bulgarian schemes worth EUR 3.7 M.
The Salt of Life project aims to establish a functional, efficient and sustainable infrastructure for water management and the control of the coastal lagoon in Atanasovsko Lake.
The Life for Kresna Gorge project is aimed at restoring the populations of birds of prey and other emblematic species in southwest Bulgaria by reducing the direct persecution and other indirect threats and improving their nesting conditions and food supply.
The overall objective of the Lesser Kesterel Recovery project is to support and strengthen the populations of the globally endangered lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni) in Bulgaria through a series of direct conservation measures andwider public involvement.
The projects under the LIFE+ program cover actions in the fields of nature conservation, environmental policy, climate change and information and communication on environmental issues.
They represent a total investment of some EUR 516.5 M, of which the EU will provide EUR 268.4 M.
