The Bulgarian Socialist Party is to officially nominate its leader, Sergey Stanishev, for president of the Party of European Socialists on Saturday.

Bulgarian Socialist Party members have stated that Stanishev, who is currently an interim president of PES, enjoys the support of most European left-wing parties and European Parliament president Martin Schulz, dnevnik.bg informs.

Stanishev, who was Bulgaria's Prime Minister in 2005-2009, was elected interim president of the Party of European Socialists on November 24, 2011, after the previous leader Poul Nyrup Rasmussen resigned for health reasons.

All candidates to head PES should be nominated by the beginning of September. The European socialists are to hold a congress on September 28 in Bucharest.
