The low level of the Danube River has forced a dozen of ships to wait near the northern Bulgarian town of Belene for a week.

According to Emil Dimitrov, head of a department at the Maritime Administration Executive Agency in Ruse, the ships are deep-draft vessels and the owners decided not to take risks.

Other ships, which have a draft of less than 1.90 meters, are disconnecting sections and dragging them across the threshold one by one.

In Dimitrov's words, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA), all ship owners were notified about the situation last week.

The Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River in Ruse has listed 29 critical spots, the most problematic ones being the regions of Belene, Vardim, Batin and Kosui.

On Tuesday, the water level of the Danube at the city of Ruse is 112 centimeters above the zero benchmark and the next two days are expected to bring a minimal increase by 6 cm.
