Aston Villa's Bulgarian skipper is not in remission from leukemia, Tony Blair's former spin doctor Alastair Campbell has said, apologizing for his misleading statement.

Reports surfaced on Sunday quoting Campbell as claiming the 33-year-old Bulgaria international was in remission from cancer.

"Apologies ... was given wrong info re Stiliyan Petrov. Treatment going well but not yet in remission," he wrote on Twitter.

Campbell is taking part in a Pedal For Petrov charity bike ride.

The loved Bulgarian midfielder was diagnosed with leukaemia at the end of March in news that shocked the public in the UK and Bulgaria and mobilized the warm support of colleagues and fans across football teams and country borders.
