Starting 2013, Bulgarian dairy farms will be able to participate in the distribution of the annual duty-free allowances for dairy products exported to the US granted to EU Member States.
Before being allowed into the quotas, Bulgaria and Romania had to hold additional talks with the US within the World Trade Organization (WTO), which were wrapped up a few days ago, according to a media statement of the Bulgarian State Fund Agriculture (SFA).
In 2013, EU Member States will be entitled to preferential exports of slightly over 16 tons of cheese, which will be subject to lower duty rates.
The quantities are distributed depending on the types of cheese traditionally made in the EU.
The exports mainly consist of French and Italian types of cheese like Blue Mould, Cheddar, Gouda, etc.
Bulgarian producers can participate in exports of brined cheeses which have a quota of over 4300 tons.
Applications for obtaining permits are to be submitted in the period September 1-10, 2012 with the SAF and the agricultural authority will issue the permits by December 15.
The documents are filed to the SFA headquarters in Sofia and applicants can find detailed information about the process at the SFA's website.
The EC is to specify the criteria for Bulgarian and Romanian dairy exporters in August.
