The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Serbia has ruled 22 articles of the Law on Establishing the Jurisdiction of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina unconstitutional.

Serbia's Constitutional Court thereby cancelled Wednesday a provision declaring Novi Sad as the capital of the province.

The northern Serbian province will also have to close its office in Brussels as a result of the ruling of the Constitutional Court's ruling.

Vojvodina established a representation office n Brussels in October 2011 in the hope of securing easier access to European regional funds and to boost foreign investment possibilities.

The Constitutional Court of Serbia also revoked the powers of Vojvodina's agencies to apply monitoring measures in the spheres of agricultural policy and rural development.

The powers of local authorities to apply environmental protection measures were also found to be contradicting the Constitution.

The League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina (LSV) called on the provincial government to refer the matter to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, defining the decision as a violation of the people's collective rights.

The Law on Establishing the Jurisdiction of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina was declared valid by a decree of then Serbian president Boris Tadi? and has been in force since January 1, 2010.
