Some 150 Bulgarian youths blocked for minutes a crosswalk on the central Sofia Vasil Levski Blvd to express their support for the scrapped Belene NPP project.
The citizens went back and forth on the crossing joining Sofia University and the Bulgarian Parliament Tuesday afternoon, blocking traffic on the busy boulevard for some 30 minutes.
"We are also protesting the massive hike in electricity prices since July 1, as well as planned new raises for next year," said one of the protesters, as quoted by Focus Information Agency.
He also explained that he and others gathered to support Belene NPP because they support nuclear energy and believe that the project will be beneficial for Bulgaria's economy.
The protest is said to be spontaneus and non-official, organized via social networks.
After the flash mob dissolved, protesters visited the house of the Bulgarian Parliament to present their demands.
After years of indecision, end of March Bulgaria's government officially gave up on Belene NPP, which it was supposed to build using the services of Russian company Atomstroyexport.
The opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party has already gathered 380,000 signatures out of 0.5 M needed to call a referendum in support of the Belene NPP project.
Facebook rumors surfaced earlier Tuesday claiming that BSP stands behind the afternoon flash mob.
Some of the participants in the recent large-scale rallies against Bulgaria's controversial new Forestry Act were outraged at the reports, saying the Socialists want to hijack their protest for a cause they oppose.
