Bulgaria: Toulouse Killer: I Love Death as You Love Life Forensic and Police officers are seen at work in front of the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school in Toulouse, France, 19 March 2012, where Mohamed Merah opened fire and killed a 30-years old teacher and three children aged 6, 3 and 10. EPA/BGNES

The Toulouse Islamist killer Mohammed Merah, whose conversation with the police was scandalously aired by a French TV channel, has said he loves death.

"You should know that in front of you stands a man who is not afraid of death. I love death as you love life," Merah told the officers.

"I am a determined person. I didn't do what I did to get caught."

"We're holding negotiations here, but beyond that, do not forget I'm armed," he said, ridiculing the officers for the fact that he managed to murder several times and avoid them. He added that he had connections with Al-Qaeda and with the underworld and stated that he knows the methods used by the police.

"I know what's going to happen," Merah declared. "I know how you operate, and I'm aware that you might kill me. It's a risk I'm making. You should know that in front of you stands a man who is not afraid of death. I love death as you love life."

The producer of Sept a Huit, the programme that broadcast the extracts, defended the decision to air them.

"We acted responsibly," said Emmanuel Chain, pointing to the recordings' news value.

"We learn how Merah trained with al-Qaeda, his determination. We learn a lot of things, it has been very much put in context."
