Firefighting Operations Continue Across Pirin and Rila Mountains
Efforts to contain the wildfires in Pirin are ongoing, despite yesterday’s rainfall in the Sandanski region that provided a temporary reprieve
The extinguishing of the wildfire that engulfed the Bistrishko Branishte natural reserve in the Vitosha Mountain near the Bulgarian capital Sofia is near conclusion on the 7th day of the effort.
According to official information of the Interior Ministry, about 70 firemen and forest rangers stayed overnight in the area of the reserve to monitor the situation.
The critical situation from Friday afternoon when strong winds flared three festering outbreaks has been overcome in full. A helicopter of Border Police has done a reconnaissance flight and has taken pictures of all new outbreaks early Saturday morning. Firemen and equipment have been immediately dispatched to their locations.
About 300 firefighters, policemen, servicemen, forest rangers and volunteers will remain in Bistrishko Branishte Saturday to work on extinguishing the remaining outbreaks, and to prevent any spreading of the blaze.
The cause of the wildfire remains unknown.
Hundreds of firemen and volunteers took part in the effort to extinguish the fire, working round-the-clock in a very difficult to access area. About 200 decares of forests and other vegetation burned out.
