Bulgaria has seen an increase of the number of patients with viral meningitis in the first six months of 2012, according to Dr. Angel Kunchev, chief inspector at the Bulgarian Health Ministry.

In his words, Bulgaria had a total of 116 registered viral meningitis cases in the past six months, which is 38 more than in the first half of 2011.

"This is only the tip of the iceberg. Most of the cases – over 80-90% - actually are milder and go unrecorded," Kunchev said Friday, as cited by Focus.

He added that Bulgaria is already experiencing a "summer wave" of flu, about a month earlier than its usual time in August.
