Negotiations to form Greece's next government must wrap up by the end of Tuesday, according to Evangelos Venizelos, leader of left-wing pro-bailout party PASOK.
Vanizelos, a former Finance Minister, has insisted on a broad coalition.
"The most crucial thing for us right now is to achieve the greatest possible range of consensus, and this must happen by tomorrow night at the latest," he said after meeting with New Democracy head Antonis Samaras, according to international media.
It is New Democracy that has the first go at trying to form a government.
Greek voters went to the polls on Sunday following inconclusive elections in May.
With 99.9% of ballots counted, interior ministry results put New Democracy on 29.7% of the vote (129 seats), Syriza on 26.9% (71) and the socialist Pasok on 12.3% (33).
There are 300 seats in parliament.
