Bulgaria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Stefan Tafrov, has presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia announced.

Tafrov has already served as Bulgaria's Ambassador to the UN in New York back in 2001-2006.

In talks after the ceremony, Secretary-General Ban praised Bulgaria's active and constructive role in the international organization and recalled his successful visit to Bulgaria in 2011, the ministry press service reported.

Ambassador Tafrov also assured the Secretary-General that Bulgaria would "continue to actively support his work in the service of the UN, for global peace and security, in defence of human rights and the promotion of democracy."

Tafrov was born in Sofia in 1958; he has a degree in journalism from Sofia University.

He has been Bulgaria's Deputy Foreign Minister twice (in 1992 and in 1997), and has also served as Bulgaria's Ambassador to Italy and Malta, the UK, Ireland, France, and as Bulgaria's Permanent Representative to UNESCO and the UN.

Tafrov speaks English, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, and Polish.
