A total of 4247 people have been granted Bulgarian citizenship over the last four months, Bulgarian Vice President Margarita Popova revealed on Tuesday.

Popova, who is in charge of deciding on whether to grant Bulgarian citizenship to foreign nationals, assumed office on January 22.

Expectedly, most of the "new Bulgarians" over the past four months are from Macedonia (2264 people).

The Slavic Macedonians who are eligible of claiming Bulgarian citizenship on the basis of Bulgarian origin under Bulgarian law are about 1.3 million.

A total of 1126 Ukrainians and 232 Israeli citizens have also been granted Bulgarian citizenship over the last four months.

316 Bulgarian citizenship requests have been denied over the same period.
