The Party of European Socialists (PES) has endorsed Serbia's incumbent President Boris Tadic for the upcoming presidential election run-off in the Balkan country, PES leader Sergey Stanishev announced Thursday.

"Boris Tadic is the clear choice for Serbian President. Under his rule, the Democratic Party put Serbia firmly of the path of social progress," Stanishev commented, as cited by Bulgarian media.

Stanishev stated that Tadic has been coping with all EU accession requirements, and especially with combating corruption and organized crime.

According to Stanishev, who is also a leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party and former Bulgarian PM, Tadic has helped Serbia overcome "the nationalistic mistakes of its past."

Tadic and his challenger Tomislav Nikolic are heading for a run-off that is to take place on May 20.
