Nikolay Rusinov, who was recently charged with the murder of a young woman in Sofia last summer, is to remain under permanent detention, the Sofia Appellate Court ruled Tuesday.
The magistrates issued the rule on grounds the suspect has left "unique DNA material on the body of the victim."
Rusinov was arrested and charged at the end of April 2012, after a lab in Austria released the result of the DNA analysis of hairs left at the crime scene. From 7 hairs, 5 were linked to Rusinov, and the other 2, to 2 other unidentified men.
According to the judge from the lowest instance, the Sofia City Court, who indicted Rusinov, he is unruly and inclined to aggressive behavior.
The body of 28-year-old Yana Krasteva was found in the central Borisova Gradina park in downtown Sofia on July 10 2011, approximately two days after she had been bludgeoned and strangled to death.
Plamen Trifonov was the first man detained in connection with the murder.
However, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov insisted in a statement in the Parliament that the murderers had been two.
Immediately after the murder Nikolay Rusinov reportedly left the country and hid in Turkey. He was also detained later as a potential suspect, but charges against him were never pressed.
He said at the time that he had met Yana one day before, the two had danced, enjoyed themselves, drank plenty of alcohol, and had sex near the place where she was found dead.
Rusinov claimed he left the victim sleeping in the bushes around 05:30 am and went home.
The initial suspect, Trifonov, who was released from custody over lack of evidence, declared at the end of 2011 that he will sue all witnesses who have implicated him in the crime for slander.
He described in a TV interview the charges against him as "manipulation" and refused knowing the victim. Trifonov further stated that the hairs collected at the crime scene were deliberately substituted by the police with his own hair samples.
