Salaries of emergency room personnel are going up by 20%, effective June 1, 2012, according to Bulgarian Health Minister, Desislava Atanasova.

Speaking in an interview for the largest private TV channel bTV, Atanasova said the money will come from savings from the Health Ministry budget.

She further informed she was working on legal amendments aimed at criminalizing physical attacks on doctors and improving staff development for young medical professionals.

On the touchy subject of sanctions for people who do not pay medical insurance, the Minister stressed that her institution is working hard on finding ways to make every single Bulgarian pay health insurance contributions.

"This is a very serious problem, which along with bad management, is the main reason for the huge debts accumulated by Bulgaria hospitals. We, however, cannot just say that everyone can decide if they would have health insurance. We are a member of the EU, where there is an established system where everyone is to pay and those in need use the funds," said she.

According to Atanasova, there are about 1.5 million uninsured Bulgarians, mostly people living abroad and those from the minorities

The Minister declared recently that Bulgarians who do not pay health insurance may be deprived of certain administrative services, including receiving identity cards and drivers licenses.
