The oldest building once used as a hospital in Bulgaria may be turned into a center for tourism and culture, it emerged on Wednesday.

An Italian company has shown interest in renovating the divisional hospital in the Northeastern city of Shumen, according to the bTV private channel.

The divisional hospital is a historical monument linked to the culture of the Ottoman Empire, 19th century English construction methods and the years after the country's liberation. Currently, the building is dilapidated and in a desperate need of repair.

The old hospital could be turned into a multifunctional museum, a local official has told bTV.

Since the repair is expected to be expensive, the assistance of EU financing will be sought.
