The Plovdiv Regional Court has decided to apply to the summary procedure in the case against 55-year old Simeon Yosifov, who ran over and killed 19-year-old Angel Petrov in the southern Bulgarian village of Katunitsa.

In summary procedure, if the court reaches a "guilty" verdict, the penalty must be reduced by 1/3.

Yosifov has been charged with a crime for which the Penal Code envisages 10-20 years of imprisonment.

According to the prosecuting authority, the 55-year-old man broke traffic rules and killed the young man intentionally.

The parents of Angel Petrov have been constituted as private prosecutors.

Four experts have been summoned to testify.

The number of eyewitnesses has been reduced from 30 to 5 as a result of the decision for a summary procedure.

On Wednesday, the first court hearing on the case, the court room was full people, including members of the Rashkovi roma clan.

Kiril Rashkov, aka Tsar Kiro, and his grandson, who have already been declared guilty of issuing death threats, were brought to the Plovdiv Regional Court in a police cordon.

The testimony of Rashkov, his son and daughter and his two grandsons will be read from the protocols.

On September 23, a van said to be carrying guests of Roma clan leader Kiril Rashkov ran over and killed 19-year-old Angel Petrov from Katunitsa.

The accident triggered unrest in the village and massive protests in the rest of the country against the backdrop of heightened ethnic tensions.
