UK Prime Minister David Cameron has offered to consider more powers for Scotland if it votes against independence in a referendum expected to take place in 2014.

Cameron has said he would be "deeply, deeply sad" if Scotland became independent, suggesting the move would have implications for the UK's EU and NATO membership, BBC informs.

"Of course Scotland could govern itself. So could England," Cameron declared in Edinburgh on Thursday. "My point is that we do it so much better together."

Cameron met with Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, who commented after the meeting that "things have moved on quite substantially".

Since Salmond's  Scottish National Party scored an impressive win in the UK local elections, a referendum on the country's possible independence to the Kingdom has been expected to be initiated.
