The miners at Bulgaria's largest State-owned coal mines Maritsa Iztok have resumed coal extraction at all three open-pit mines.

Coal extraction at the mines was disrupted as a result of the flood caused by the heavy rains and melting snow.

The news about the resumed work was reported Tuesday by the BTA news agency, citing the company's press office.

The supply of coal to the Thermal Power Plant, TPP, "Maritsa Iztok 2" has been reinstated in the afternoon, according to the Deputy Economy and Energy Minister, Delyan Dobrev, who spoke for reporters from the location, after a meeting of the emergency headquarters at the mines.

Maritsa Iztok have also restarted coal supply for the briquette production at the Brikel plant in the southern Bulgarian town of Galabovo.

Emergency teams are continuing work to repair the pump station and the railroad between the mines, which was flooded and further impeded transportation of coal.

Dobrev reported that currently only the mines and not the TPPs have registered losses, adding the situation at Maritsa Iztok is now under control.
