Manchester United will give Bulgarian forward Dimitar Berbatov a 1-year extension of his contract, contrary to rumors they are ready to transfer him.
According to reports in the UK press, the team is expected to activate a clause in its 2008 contract with Berbatov, which would require the Bulgarian to stay on the team.
In the last year, the top-scoring striker played seldom and stayed on the reserve squad, fuelling rumors he would better leave the team.
French Paris Saint-Germain and German Bayer Leverkusen were among the teams reported to be most interested in Berbatov.
If the clause is activated, Berbatov will not receive a wage rise on his reported GBP 100,000-a-week salary either, as United seek to protect their original investment, writes The Sun.
According to the paper, manager Alex Ferguson has spoken to Berbatov these weeks and informed the forward he is happy to retain him as a valuable member of the squad.
The contract extension is expected to be signed early March, and ManUn would then only consider a sale if someone matches the asking price of around GBP 8 M.
