Party of European Socialists and Bulgarian Socialist Party chair Sergey Stanishev has once again slammed what socialists see as the autocratic rule of Hungarian PM Viktor Orban.

Wednesday the European Commission had announced it starts an infringement procedure against Hungary, motivated by controversial legislation that significantly curbed media freedom, and the independence of the judiciary and central bank.

Wednesday Orban, chair of the center-right Fidesz party, spoke to the European Parliament, assuring that the legislation, as well as the recently adopted new Hungarian constitution does not swerve from democracy.

"Viktor Orban is leading Hungary down a lonely road," commented on his part PES president Stanishev, as quoted by the Financial Times Wednesday, and the Bulgarian Socialist Party Thursday.

Stanishev assured that the European leftists "believe in principles by taking clear stands on the tough issues," and that they will continue to pressure against what they see as infringements on democracy and the rule of law in Hungary.

Earlier this week, the Bulgarian socialist leader had warned that his home country, ruled by center-right GERB cabinet chaired by PM Boyko Borisov, could take Hungary's road.
