Bulgarian college students are staging Thursday a rally to protest the inactivity and callousness of police and to demand increased security measures at the campus of New Bulgarian University in Sofia.
The protest was triggered by the rape of a female student at the dark, unlit area of the campus.
This would be the second day of protests, after 150 college students gathered Wednesday to voice outrage.
The 23-year-old woman had been raped in the evening of January 3, but what angered young people even more was the despicable attitude and mockery on the part of policemen in the hours after the trauma was inflicted.
The girl was held for 3 hours at night without being given medical care and an ambulance was not summoned by the police. Instead, they kept the victim until 3 am at the place where she had been raped.
Police further failed to call a medical team to check the condition of the girl, and whether she can testify, or needs hospitalization. There had been no psychologist to work with her immediately and monitor her emotional and mental state.
The identity of the victim is currently being kept secret. The perpetrator remains unknown.
According to the victim, the attacker raped her for two hours in the snow and then vanished.
The protesters insist that the City Hall quickly installs lights in the dark area and increases police patrolling.
