The Scottish cabinet is preparing a referendum on potential independence from the UK in 2014, Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond has announced.

Even though the UK government says Scotland cannot legally go ahead without its authority, Salmond has insisted that UK PM David Cameron had "no mandate" to set the rule, BBC informs.

The Scottish First Minister has told BBC Radio 4 that it was "not fair" to suggest he was worried he would lose if the referendum had only two options - to stay in the UK or leave it - which is the UK government's preference.

"Why should we be excluding what is a legitimate point of view across Scotland?" Salmond has been quoted saying.

"Perhaps the Westminster politicians are trying to set the ground rules, the timing, who votes, the questions because they are frightened they will lose it?" he has rhetorically asked.

Since Salmond's  Scottish National Party scored an impressive win in the UK local elections, a referendum on the country's possible independence to the Kingdom has been expected to be initiated.
