No more nuclear power units are currently necessary to be constructed in Bulgaria, the rightist Union of Democratic Forces party has stated in a declaration.

Bulgaria exported records amounts of electricity in 2011 and the existing units were not even working at half of their capacity, the party has pointed out in its declaration, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.

On Thursday, Bulgaria's Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Traicho Traikov revealed that he construction of a seventh unit at the Kozloduy nuclear power plant may start before the end of the ruling centrist-right GERB government's term in office.

Traikov stated that it was "wiser, cheaper and more logical" for Bulgaria to build a reactor on the ground of its only existing Kozloduy nuclear power plant than to construct a new plant in Belene.

However, the oppositional Union of Democratic Forces believes that neither option would be reasonable at this moment. According to the rightist party, the government should first launch a program for the energy modernization of the so called "panel construction" residential and apartment buildings in the country.

The idea for such a program has also been endorsed by Bulgaria's President-elect, GERB's former Regional Development Minister Rosen Plevneliev.

The Union of Democratic Forces has estimated that Bulgaria will not need any new nuclear units until after 2025, when "hopefully, new and completely safe units will be available on the market."
