Tens of thousands of Hungarians demonstrated against the country's new constitution late Monday night in front of the Budapest Opera.

The crowd demanded the resignation of conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban, DPA reported.

Orban and his cabinet were taking part in an event at the opera house to mark the constitution, which came into force on January 1.

Critics say it undermines democracy in the Central European state. The new document was pushed through by the two-thirds majority of the ruling Fidesz party.

The constitution replaces the 1989 charter which secured basic democratic rights and anchored Hungary among Western democracies; it contains those basic democratic rights but has curbed the powers of the constitutional court.

Other grievances focus on the fact that Orban has appointed people to key public offices for terms lasting the equivalent of several parliaments, DPA points out.
