The spate of car fires, which hit Los Angeles on Thursday, continued into the first day of 2012.
According to reports of international news agencies, 40 vehicles have so far burned down, 4 of which were torched on New Year's Eve.
Although some of the fires spread and damaged nearby buildings, none have brought injuries.
The arsons were estimated to have caused damages worth USD 1 M.
The authorities declared a USD 35 000 reward for information leading to a conviction.
Local media said the city had been plagued by the worst arson spree since the 1992 Rodney King riots.
