Iran’s military has successfully conducted a medium-range surface-to-air missile test near the strategic Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, according to state media.
"This medium-range surface-to-air missile is equipped with the latest technology to combat radar-evading targets and intelligent systems which try to disrupt missile navigation," the IRNA news agency reported, quoting Commodore Mahmoud Mousavi.
The test was conducted during naval taking place near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, IRNA said, cited by RIA Novosti.
Iran has been holding naval exercises in the area since December 24, and that are to continue for 10 days.
The West, led by the United States, suspects Iran of pursuing a secret nuclear weapons program, but the Islamic Republic insists it needs nuclear power only for civilian purposes. Iran is already the subject of a wide range of international sanctions.
Iranian officials have hinted that the country's military might easily blockade the Hormuz Strait, the world's primary oil tanker transportation route, if it is faced with international pressure.
