Italy will open its labor market to Bulgarian workers as of January 01, 2012, said Iliana Ivanova, MEP from center-right ruling party GERB.

Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy have already been officially notified about Italy's plans to drop labor restrictions on Bulgarian citizens from January 01, 2012.

"On the eve of New Year's Eve, the Italian government took a truly European and responsible stance which could only serve as an example to other member states," the MEP commented.

"Everybody is talking about integration, about more Europe, but Italy showed not only by words, but by action, that it is open to more European integration. I am very pleased about that," Ivanova added.

The United Kingdom, Ireland and the Netherlands have confirmed that they will keep their labor markets closed to Bulgarian workers.

Germany will partially lift labor restrictions for Bulgarian citizens, while the decisions of France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Malta and Denmark on the matter are yet to be announced.
