The death of former Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi may have been a war crime, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Luis Moreno-Ocampo has stated.
"The death of Moammar Gadhafi is one of the issues to be clarified — what happened — because there are serious suspicions that it was a war crime," the chief prosecutor told reporters on Thursday.
Moreno-Ocampo has already sent a letter to the head of Libya's Transitional National Council asking what the government's plans are to investigate alleged war crimes by all parties, including the rebels.
The International Criminal Court is working closely with Libyan authorities not only on Gadhafi's case but on those of his son, Seif al-Islam, and former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi, Moreno-Ocampo has also revealed, according to USA Today.
Libya's interim leaders have been under intense pressure from Western allies to investigate the circumstances of Gaddafi's death.
