Bulgaria: Bulgarian Left-Winger: Stop the Illiterate from Voting! Bulgarian Socialist Party's key MP Lyuben Kornezov believes minimum education requirement shoud be introduced for voters. BGNES

Obligatory educational requirements for voting should be introduced in Bulgaria, according to left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party's key MP, Lyuben Kornezov.

"According to unofficial data, the illiterate in Bulgaria are approximately 18%; they do not know how to read but it is these citizens who vote the most. I am not against them, but you have to understand that it is these people who determine the country's rulers," Kornezov pointed out in an interview for the private Darik radio.

"There are people who do not pay their taxes, do not pay their water or electricity bills and are a burden for society by living on social security, but when it comes to elections, they are the first ones to vote if there is someone out there to bribe them," the lawmaker commented.

He stated he was against the notion that voting should be made obligatory in Bulgaria.

In his interview, Kornezov revealed that his party is ready to ask the Constitutional Court to cancel ruling centrist-right GERB's recent amendment that would increase the retirement age in the country with three months each year until 2014.

Outgoing President and former Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Georgi Parvanov vetoed the amendment but GERB's parliamentary majority is expected to pass it again.
